Lilli Palmer
20-year-old actress Romy Schneider plays the schoolgirl Manuela von Meinhardis, who is attracted to her teacher Fräulein von Bernburg (Lilli Palmer) in a strict Christian boarding school in MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM (DE / FR 1958).
Lilli Palmer (1914-1986) was one of the great stars of post-war West German cinema. As a stage novice, she had fled into exile in Paris in 1933 until she landed her first film roles in London. She starred alongside Peter Lorre in Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller SECRET AGENT (1936), among others. In 1942 she married the well-known stage and film actor Rex Harrison. In 1945, Lilli Palmer signed a contract with Warner Brothers and starred in Hollywood alongside Gary Cooper in Fritz Lang’s CLOAK AND DAGGER (1946), among other films. Palmer returned to Europe in 1954 for FEUERWERK and became a sought-after leading lady in melodramas in West Germany, such as TEUFEL IN SEIDE (1955, with Curd Jürgens) and ANASTASIA, DIE LETZTE ZARENTOCHTER (1956). She lived in Switzerland until her death in 1986 and was internationally active as an actress but also as a painter and writer.
